Think of the perfect outfit: Oftentimes, it’s just that one crucial piece that makes it all come together. Maybe it’s the ideal shoe, or that one shiny necklace, or the expensive jeans that give your ensemble the best boost.
But one thing is for certain: pair your getup with the right jacket, and it’s bound to give you a polished look that others envy. The hardest part is figuring out which layering piece that is.
Rebecca Minkoff—a designer known for her affordable luxury fashion brand and the founder of The Female Founder Collective—says that good outerwear is the best approach to a purposeful and well-thought-out ensemble.
“A great jacket is probably one of the fastest ways to make an outfit feel intentional,” she tells Parade.
She adds that one specific closet staple will bring your look exactly what it needs, especially if it starts with plain essentials.
“You can have the simplest basics underneath, but once you add a jacket with the right shape and structure, suddenly it looks like a full outfit,” says Minkoff.
Here, she reveals the essential coat that instantly makes almost any outfit look more polished—and how to best style it for casual, work and evening events.

The One Essential Jacket That Elevates Any Outfit
According to Minkoff, the one essential jacket for your wardrobe is a good peacoat.
However, she says that while it’s a traditional pick, it’s always useful to choose one that has a bit of character to it.
“I don’t want one that feels too traditional. I like a classic piece that still has some personality,” she explains.
The peacoat is an ideal essential jacket option because it elevates simple outfits while making you look assembled in all the right ways.
“There’s something about the structure of a peacoat that immediately makes you look pulled together, even if you’re just wearing jeans and a T-shirt underneath,” Minkoff tells Parade.
Her suggestion for a great piece is the Kelly Peacoat ($89.98) from her latest QVC-exclusive RM Studio x Rebecca Minkoff collection, as the “removable hood gives it a much more modern feel.”
“You can wear it with the hood for a casual, layered look or take the hood out and it becomes much cleaner and more polished,” suggests Minkoff. “I’m always drawn to pieces that do some of the styling work for you, and this one does.”

Key Features That Make a Peacoat Look Instantaneously Polished
Using her own Kelly Peacoat as an example, Minkoff explains that peacoats like this one tend to give the overall outfit a more structured look because of their double-breasted silhouette.
“It immediately makes everything underneath feel more pulled together,” she states.
Another peacoat feature that makes it seem so polished is the relaxed, slightly cropped fit it gives off. The designer says it’s structured, but still allows for movement and layering.
“The sponge-knit fabric keeps it comfortable, while the shorter length helps give you shape so it doesn’t feel boxy or overwhelming,” she shares.
Plus, Minkoff’s peacoat, like others, has a removable hood. This is one of her favorite features since it lets you have “two jackets in one,” she says. This allows the jacket to be really versatile for different looks, whether you want to look dressier or more casual.
“Leave the hood in when you want that cool layered look without actually having to wear a hoodie underneath,” she advises. “Take it out and the jacket instantly feels cleaner and more dressed up.”

How To Style a Peacoat for Casual, Work and Evening Looks
Wondering how to style a peacoat for different types of events? Minkoff gives some examples for arranging it depending on when you’re wearing it.

Minkoff’s advice for a casual peacoat look? Leave the hood on and simply wear it with a great pair of jeans and a simple T-shirt. Better yet, style it with a thin knit and boots.
“The hood gives you that effortless layered look without needing to pile on a bunch of pieces,” she tells Parade.
Work

Here’s your chance to wear the peacoat in all its traditional glory. Minkoff says the best way to wear it for work is to take the hood off—if it comes with one, that is—so you get that classic look the peacoat was always meant for.
Style it with a button-down or a fitted knit with wide-leg trousers, paired with a loafer or boot, she suggests. You’ll instantly have the perfect elegant finish to a work outfit.
“It feels polished without making you look like you’re wearing a traditional suit to the office,” she explains.

This coat is structured, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve a night out on the town. Minkoff suggests wearing it with something a little gentle, and it becomes the perfect look for a girly evening.
“I love using a structured coat against something a little more feminine or sexy,” she explains. “Take the hood out, throw it over a slip dress and add a kitten heel for date night or a combat boot if you want more edge.”
Better yet, a statement bag on top makes this look feel really authentic but pleasantly surprising.
“That contrast is what makes the look feel cooler and less expected,” she shares.

How To Choose the Right Length and Fit for Your Body Shape
Minkoff says proportion “makes a big difference” in apparel such as jackets, although she’s not a big believer in regulating what others are “supposed” to wear based on body type.
“If you put something on, you love how you look and you feel good in it, that matters more to me,” she explains.
However, the peacoat has a looser shape at times, so you want to ensure that “you’re wearing the jacket and the jacket isn’t wearing you,” according to Minkoff. Depending on your body type and shape, there are a lot of helpful ways to wear the jacket that’ll ensure it looks flattering on you.
One of the most important aspects to look at is where the shoulders sit as well as the hem. Also, if you have a smaller frame, she says to not go too large on the jacket.
“I’d be careful about going so oversized or long that your frame disappears,” Minkoff tells Parade. “If you’re taller or have a longer torso, you can play a little more with volume and proportion.”
Those who have more volume around their chest or midsection will have some more options in how they wear the peacoat, she adds.
“You can leave it completely open, zip only the inside or button everything up,” she says. “Because this one is cropped, you still get shape no matter how you choose to wear it.”
Working with QVC allows Minkoff to chat with people live on TV about how to wear certain products. Online, she suggests a size chart that can assist people who don’t know how an item might fit them.
“You can also watch me talk through the fit and different ways to style it,” she says, if you’re thinking of going with the Kelly.
Her last practical tip when going with the peacoat? Check its cleaning requirements.
“Structure can get ruined pretty quickly if something is difficult to care for,” she says. “I love that this one is machine washable, doesn’t require dry cleaning and travels really well.”
