Dennis Haskins, who appeared on Saved by the Bell as Principal Richard Belding, died on September 27 at the age of 75, and it’s now been revealed that his immediate cause of death was Parkinson’s disease, according to the actor’s death certificate from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which was obtained by TMZ (and has now been reported by Deadline, People, and other outlets).
The certificate notes that Haskins passed away at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, while also mentioning that he was dealing with additional physical and mental health issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome, depression, hypertension, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Although Haskins chose to keep the fact that he had Parkinson’s disease private before his death, other stars have revealed that they have also been diagnosed with what the Parkinson’s Foundation explains is “a progressive brain disorder that damages dopamine-producing neurons.” It causes symptoms like “tremor, stiffness, slow movement and non-movement issues like depression or sleep issues,” and there is currently no cure.
The late Ozzy Osbourne also had Parkinson’s disease, as do singers Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Diamond, as well as actor Alan Alda, actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr., and former NFL quarterback Brett Favre.
Back to the Future and Family Ties star Michael J. Fox was diagnosed in 1991, when he was 29, and has since founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. This past February, he told TIME, “I know we’ve done a lot, but we haven’t cured Parkinson’s. I’m always pushing and never happy until we get this done. We’ve changed the way people think about the disease, and we know there’s an end, and we’ll find it.”
