ROCHESTER, N.Y. — There are 80 shopping days left until Christmas, and retailers have already started rolling out holiday sales.
Amazon kicked off its October Prime Sale this week, and 15 other retailers are also offering discounts.
Amazon’s deals include electronics and clothing, but experts say tech products are the main focus this holiday season.
“Over 70 percent of U.S. adults are looking at buying tech products and services,” said Dashia Milden, senior consumer insight editor for CNET.
Tips for shoppers: Don’t buy the latest model
Milden’s first tip for shoppers is to avoid buying the latest model if price is a priority.
“Another one is the Apple Earpod Max-2. We do know that the Apple Earpods 5 was recently released but there’s still a lot of value in these older models or generations and can save you a little bit of money,” Milden said.
Amazon is not the only retailer with deals on electronics. Walmart and Best Buy are also offering the same price on Apple Airpods.
Should I wait until Black Friday?
Some shoppers wonder if they should wait for Black Friday to get better deals.
“If you see a really good deal that you can afford right now and meets all of your needs I would not wait. The only exception to that is TVs. We usually see better deals around Black Friday Cyber Monday,” Milden said.
Fake deals
Spotting fake deals can be tricky. News10NBC asked Milden how to spot fake deals.
“So when we think about fake deals, we have to think about inflated baseline prices,” Milden said.
For example, a shirt advertised as 47% off on Amazon had actually been selling for $22.88 for most of the last three months, making the real discount only 17%.
Another example is a Samsonite luggage set listed at $209.44, down from $509.99, which appears to be 59% off. However, price history shows it sold for $375 most of the last three months, so the actual discount is 44%.
New Amazon AI tool
Amazon has introduced a new AI tool called Alexa for Shopping to help shoppers check price histories. On the app, users can tap a blue oval with a lowercase “a” in the bottom right corner and ask Alexa for information, including price history.
