U.S. Customs to tighten enforcement on prescription drugs mailed from outside the country

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Americans will soon be blocked from mail ordering prescription medications from Canada, a move that could cost local families thousands of dollars a year.

For years, federal regulators have allowed small shipments from licensed Canadian pharmacies to pass through the border without enforcement, even though routine importation of prescription drugs has never technically been allowed. That is set to change on Oct. 22.

Many folks in our region, especially seniors, pay out of pocket to get medications from Canada because it is cheaper than getting them in the United States, even with insurance.

Wendy White of Fairport says her cardiologist recommended a particular Canadian pharmacy, saying it is well respected and that she has had several patients use it.

White takes the blood thinner Eliquis, “the brand name prescription here with insurance is almost $500. The generic, this is for a 90-day supply, is $149 plus shipping but now because of the tariff issues there’s a $61 Canadian tariff on the medication but that still takes it to $200 and that’s less than half of what it would be with insurance here,” she tells News10NBC.

The generic version won’t be available in the United States for a few more years so, White will either have to pay thousands more or find an alternative.

The Trump administration says it is tightening enforcement because the process was being exploited to facilitate illegal drug shipments and evade tariffs, which hurt domestic businesses.

In a statement to News10NBC, Rep. Joe Morelle (D, Rochester) says, “Americans should never be forced to choose between paying an unaffordable price for medication and going without the prescriptions they need. I strongly support efforts to stop dangerous and counterfeit drugs from entering our country, but new enforcement procedures cannot come at the expense of people who safely rely on legitimate, lower-cost prescription medications from licensed pharmacies abroad. I signed a letter urging HHS, FDA, DHS, and CBP to ensure these changes do not disrupt access to legitimate medications for personal use, to clearly explain how these shipments will be evaluated, and to delay implementation unless they can provide assurances that Americans won’t lose access to the prescriptions they depend on. We can protect our communities from dangerous drugs while preserving access to safe, affordable medication.”
