The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education is back to full strength after swearing in its latest member on Thursday.
Tongde Wu, a regulatory affairs consultant and Glenwood Elementary School parent, took her oath of office at the start of the board’s latest work session to formally join its ranks. Wu was selected from an applicant pool of 53 community members to fill the vacant seat left by the departure of Rani Dasi in August.
Orange County District Court Judge and former CHCCS school board member Joal Broun administered the oath to Wu, whose son was there to help.
“This moment is bigger than me,” Wu said in her opening comments after taking her seat alongside her board colleagues. “I have to thank my parents, my son, my community — both from Glenwood and ASEC — [and] also from my church. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be here. You guys give me the courage and all the support I need for me to take this step.”

The rest of the school board selected Wu on September 24, finishing out the process of finding a replacement for Dasi, who recently joined the Board of Orange County Commissioners by appointment. Since Dasi’s four-year term is not set to end until December 2027, state law required the seat to be filled. Wu joined dozens of other applicants for the role, but her scientific background, experience as an educator and perspective from a school community that is in transition to a new campus appeared valuable to the board.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Wu to the Board of Education,” Chair Riza Jenkins said in a release through the district following Thursday’s meeting. “Her experience as a parent, educator and scientist will bring an important perspective to our work on behalf of students, staff and families across our district.”
Wu holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology earned at the University of Arizona. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and holds a Regulatory Affairs Certification, employed by the Biologics Consulting Group based out of Virginia. Wu previously worked as a research assistant professor at North Carolina Central University and a postdoctoral associate at UNC-Chapel Hill.
During her pitch to school board members on September 24, Wu emphasized a belief in evidence-based data and research to inform decisions made by the district’s leaders — especially ahead of a redistricting effort and ongoing funding constraints impacted by CHCCS’ enrollment. A frequent figure during the public comment portion of meetings amid the board’s deliberations around Glenwood Elementary School’s future, she also told the school board in her application that she has come to better appreciate all the factors the elected officials must weigh in their decisions.
“I take this job very seriously,” Wu said to punctuate her comments on Thursday, “and I’m going to listen and learn and care for my community. I’ll do my job with honor, humility and care.”
