ROCHESTER, N.Y. — If you looked up at the sky early Tuesday morning, you may have seen an unusual sight. The crescent moon passed directly in front of Jupiter.
During the rare event, called lunar occultation, Jupiter disappeared behind the moon for about an hour before suddenly reappearing. Occultation happens when a larger celestial object, like the moon, passes in front of a smaller, more distant one, according to NASA. The last time Jupiter’s lunar occultation was visible in New York State was back in 2004.
The occultation was visible across most of North America. For New York State, Jupiter began moving behind the moon around 4:30 a.m. and reappeared around 5:30 a.m. News10NBC’s overnight photojournalist captured this video:
