Oprah may be better known for her say in books, but there was once a time during her thriving daytime talk show when she lent her stamp of approval to food, too.
In fact, True Food Kitchen impressed the media mogul enough to put her money where her mouth is.
After being introduced to the health-focused restaurant chain by longtime friend and trainer Bob Greene, Winfrey made an equity investment in the company in 2018 and joined its board of directors.
Eight years later, Winfrey remains a minority investor—but the restaurant chain is now facing a much different future.

True Food Kitchen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, announcing plans to restructure its finances, streamline operations and pursue a court-supervised sale.
The filing came alongside another major shake-up: 12 of the chain’s 46 restaurants closed following their final day of service on Oct. 4.
The closures include three California restaurants—Century City in Los Angeles, El Segundo and San Diego UTC—along with locations in Miami; Chicago; New Orleans; Bethesda, Md.; Edison and Hackensack, N.J.; Garden City, N.Y.; Columbus, Ohio; and Reston, Va.
The San Diego Fashion Valley location remains open.
That leaves 34 True Food Kitchen restaurants across 14 states, which the company says remain open and serving customers as usual during the bankruptcy proceedings.
Founded in Phoenix in 2008, True Food Kitchen built its brand around health-conscious dining and has since expanded across the country.
Now, it’s looking to right the ship.
