ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Some landline users in the Rochester area have questions about whether their service will be phased out in November.
A viewer named Linda wrote to News10NBC asking: “There has been a lot of discussion with friends about whether or not it’s true that landlines will be phased out sometime in November 2026… Can you clarify for us?”
News10NBC’s Emily Putnam brought Linda’s question to Verizon, which acquired Frontier, the company that sent letters to local landline customers last month. The FCC requires carriers to notify customers before cutting service, and those letters went out Sept. 8.
Emily asked Verizon spokesperson Diana Alvear if landlines will be phased out next month.
“No. The simple answer to that is no, and there’s a number of reasons for that. So I would first say that this is actually about copper landlines being phased out,” Alvear said. “But the actual process of phasing out the copper landlines is going to take months and months and months. You’re not going to see any changes until next year at the earliest, and that’s only after we determine what kind of quality alternative options you have.”
News10NBC conducted a poll on Facebook and Instagram, and roughly 95% of respondents said they did not have a landline. Though some users said they still rely on landlines. Here are some of the responses:
“We use it for spam phone calls, etc.” “Mostly use it to prevent spam on our cell phones!” “Yes. Had it for my work-from-home job for years because we’re in the radio-shadow of Cobbs Hill” “Yes. For emergencies.” “Yes; we tend to get much better reception on it.”Verizon says about 3% of its customers are landline users. If Frontier customers see a Nov. 30 date in a letter, that is the date the FCC has authorized Frontier to begin assessing options for copper landline users. Verizon filed the application with the FCC to remove copper landlines the day after those letters went out, but Alvear says no one will be disconnected next month.
“The FCC is very concerned about us doing a number of things,” said Alvear. “Number one: to inform our customers with ample notice. So, making sure that you have plenty of time to not only understand what’s happening and the changes that are coming, but to also be informed of your options in terms of alternative services, or, you know there are a small handful of copper landline customers that are just going to keep their service because they don’t have quality alternatives.”
Verizon expects this to be a long process, and customers who rely on copper landlines will hear from their carrier about available options. Verizon says the company’s goal is to make the transition as seamless as possible, even allowing customers to keep their landline phone numbers and handsets. Instead of plugging the phone into the wall, Verizon says the phone would simply plug into a new device, and a technician can help set it up if needed.
