Straight after Douglas reached the 1992 Oscars at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, an FBI agent and an LAPD sergeant abruptly stopped the actor to share unsettling news. The authorities identified a “credible threat” involving a madman who intended to inject an HIV-laced needle in his arm during the live telecast.
“As I walked out, I took a quick glance into the crowd to make sure that no one was rushing to the stage,” Douglas writes of the heart-pounding moment he walked out alongside Jodie Foster to present the Best Actress award. “All I could see were blinding lights.”
No one inside the glitter-filled auditorium knew at the time that law enforcement had secretly placed undercover agents around the room to keep an eye on the situation.
Douglas said officials talked him out of going on stage, but he took the risk.
