Ravichandran Ashwin snubs Ravindra Jadeja, names Indias best spin-bowling all-rounder

Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Axar Patel over Ravindra Jadeja in the current white-ball setup. Ashwin believes Axar is ahead of Jadeja at present, highlighting his effectiveness as a finger spinner despite the challenges the role brings in modern cricket.

There has been competition between the two left-arm all-rounders ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Jadeja returned to India’s ODI setup after an eight-month absence, while Axar and Washington Sundar continue to push for regular opportunities across white-ball formats.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin stated that he rates Axar Patel ahead of Ravindra Jadeja in white-ball cricket. He added that Axar has the ability to perform his role effectively despite the limitations faced by finger spinners.

"Because of the subtleties, Axar is ahead of Jadeja at this point. Axar the white-ball bowler is right up there. It will always be up and down for a finger spinner and you may not get as many wickets all the time," Ashwin said.

Axar Patel produced an impressive spell in the Asian Games 2026 final against Pakistan, taking 2/29 in four overs. He finished the tournament with four wickets from two matches at an average of 9.25 and an economy rate of 5.28.

Jadeja, meanwhile, played two matches in India’s recent ODI series against the West Indies and took only two wickets at an average of 64.50 and an economy rate of 6.45. He was then left out of the playing XI for the final ODI.

Washington Sundar Needs More Opportunities - Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin also discussed Washington Sundar and called for the all-rounder to bowl more regularly. He believes Sundar has the skills to develop further but is not getting enough opportunities to show his bowling ability.

"I would love to watch Washi bowling more. I want him to develop those subtleties as a bowler. He has the skills but he is underselling them. He is getting less opportunities and he can really go up as a bowler," Ashwin said.

Washington Sundar also made an impact in the Asian Games 2026 final against Pakistan. He returned figures of 2/29 from four overs and dismissed Sahibzada Farhan and Abdul Samad.

Ravichandran Ashwin Warns Against Comparing IPL And T20I Form

Ravichandran Ashwin also said Axar Patel's IPL form should not be used to judge his international T20 performances. He stated that there are differences between franchise cricket and international cricket.

"I will also give a lot of credit to Axar. In this day and age, for a finger spinner without a lot of variations, he comes and bowls in the powerplay and later comes and does the job wherever the team requires it. His form dipped a bit in the IPL last year but we cannot confuse it with T20Is. IPL and international T20 is very different. Things are very different in the IPL," he added.

Axar Patel has taken 109 wickets in 107 T20Is at an average of 22.04 and an economy rate of 7.44, with the best figures of 3/9. He has the ability to bowl in the powerplay and adapt to different roles.
