India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill had a hilarious response when a reporter asked him about the team’s preparations for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. Gill reminded the journalist that he is not part of the T20I setup with a blunt, “T20? Main toh hoon hi nahi.”
The right-handed batter was returning from New Chandigarh after India won the ODI series against the West Indies 2-1. Meanwhile, the T20I squad had returned from Japan after winning the Asian Games gold medal and will begin a five-match series against the West Indies in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Shubman Gill was asked about India’s gold-medal triumph at the 2026 Asian Games. India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final to successfully defend their gold medal in men’s cricket.
Gill kept his response short, saying, “Congratulations to the Indian team and my teammates.”
The reporter then asked Gill about the planning for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. Gill appeared caught off guard before giving a direct response that quickly went viral on social media.
“T20? Mai toh hu hi nahi,” Gill said, reminding the reporter that he is not part of India’s current T20I setup.

— फ (@FlaviaNagpal) October 5, 2026Shubman Gill Dropped From India T20I Setup
Shubman Gill returned to India’s T20I squad ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup and was also appointed vice-captain. However, his place came under scrutiny after a difficult run in the shortest format, and he was eventually left out of the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
His last T20I appearance came against South Africa in December 2025. Since then, Gill has not been part of India’s T20I plans, with competition for the opening spots increasing.
Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are among the options in the current setup. The BCCI has also indicated that it does not want to burden Gill with the demands of all three formats while he leads India in Tests and ODIs.
Gill has continued to remain a key player in the longer formats, particularly in ODIs and Tests.
Shubman Gill Continues Strong ODI Run
Shubman Gill led India to a 2-1 ODI series victory over the West Indies and finished as the Player of the Series after scoring 334 runs in three matches. His standout performance came in the second ODI, when he scored an unbeaten 223.
After India lost the third ODI in New Chandigarh, Gill reflected on the team’s performance and the factors that influenced the result.
“Lot of boxes ticked. I think there are still some areas that definitely need some fine tuning. I was very happy with the total. I think the game was in control,” Gill said.
“But being behind four overs with this dew and then in the last, I think they took the game away from us. Had we not been shortened the overs, the game might have went to the last over,” he added.
Gill will now take a break while India’s T20I squad begins its five-match series against the West Indies on October 6. He is expected to feature for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy while continuing his preparations for India’s longer-format commitments and the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
