LIBERTY — Motorists across Ohio are receiving relief at the gas pump until December, but the township will not be losing out as a result of it, according to Liberty’s fiscal officer.
As part of his report at Monday’s trustees meeting, Fiscal Officer Matthew Connelly noted the township’s funds are looking good compared to years ago, with a balance of more than $8 million, with $2.3 million of it attributed to the Belmont Park Cemetery’s endowment fund.
“So that really leaves you with $6.6 million, and last year at this time, we were at $7.1 million, so we’re about $500,000 down from last year,” Connelly said. “But last year, I included the final payment to real estate taxes. We haven’t gotten the final payment yet, so it’ll be close.”
In terms of gas tax money from the state, Connelly said state officials recently removed it.
He was referring to a 90-day Ohio gas tax holiday passed Sept. 30 in the Senate and then in the House 78-16, which will reduce the tax on gasoline and diesel fuel from 38.5 cents and 47 cents, respectively, to $0.0001.
The holiday went into effect Sunday, following Gov. Mike DeWine’s signing of House Bill 519.
Taxes on other motor fuels such as compressed natural gas, propane and liquefied natural gas are not affected.
Connelly said Liberty typically receives between $20,000 and $25,000 in gas tax from the state.
“We’re still going to get that — it’s just coming out of the general fund from the state’s treasury,” Connelly said.
In terms of whether the township has seen tax money from new developments, Connelly said he hasn’t, as he doesn’t get a breakdown of new developments from the county.
