Honeoye Falls housing proposal for 200 homes, 37 townhomes and 170 apartments draws infrastructure concerns from locals

HONEOYE FALLS, N.Y. — Some residents in Honeoye Falls are pushing back against a proposed housing development that could bring hundreds of new people to the village.

The village is considering a project that would add 200 single-family homes, 37 townhomes and 170 apartment units to a community with a population of just under 3,000 people. It could increase the village’s population by 30% to 40%.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski reported that many residents are worried about the impact on infrastructure, population and the character of the village.

    Resident pushback

“We’re concerned about it because of the traffic congestion that it threatens to have on the community, the environmental impact on the community, the safety concerns in the community, the weight and demands that will come on our ambulance and fire services,” Jim Myers said.

Myers and more than 100 neighbors attended the village’s zoning meeting to voice their opposition to the project. Lifelong resident Wiley Jobe said, “My biggest concern is growth, too quickly without any plan.”

Village wants to hear from residents

Village Mayor Robert Milne said he is open to development but wants to listen to residents’ concerns. “We talk about infrastructure, I’m talking about the wastewater treatment plant. I’m talking about sewer. We have capacity there. The school district had 2700 plus kids in it at one point in time, and now it has 2100 plus…but again, it’s on property that zoned for residential. Most people, I believe, are most concerned about the magnitude, the size of the development. The village has a lot of questions as well,” Milne said.

    Developer points to housing shortage

Bill Arieno, of Morrell Builders, said the company hopes to address those questions before the project’s potential approval. “There’s a need for housing at almost every single level. The governor’s agenda is to, drive more housing, and we’re one way of solving that, by building, new homes…All of them would be for sale, the townhomes, all three different levels of [single-family homes]. The apartments, those would be rentals situation, which is, in demand as well,” Arieno said.

The approval process is still expected to take months, if not years. Stick with News10NBC for any updates.

The next village zoning board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 2.
