Frozen berry recall linked to E. coli outbreak expands to Walmart, Trader Joes in dozens of states

Check your freezers: A major recall of frozen blueberries due to E. coli concerns has expanded once again, with more bags recalled from Walmart and now Trader Joe’s grocery stores in more than two dozen states including Illinois.

The announcement, issued Oct. 2, from Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., marks the second time the recall has expanded. It was initially announced July 3, with only certain bags of frozen GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries berries sold at some Publix stores impacted.

By September 2, the recall expanded to include bags of frozen berries sold at Walmart stores in 16 states. On Oct. 2, the company announced the recall now includes additional bags of frozen berries sold at Walmart stores in even more states, and at Trader Joe’s grocery stores.

The recalls prompted an outbreak investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with a total of 17 people in two states sickened with the outbreak strain of E. coli. Of those, six people were hospitalized.

Symptoms begin anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food or up to nine days later, the FDA said, and can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting.

According to the FDA, the outbreak was declared over, but the recalled products may still be in people’s freezers.

Here’s a breakdown of the latest recalled products associated with the E. coli outbreak, and where they were sold. Consumers are advised to either throw away the products or return them to Walmart or Trader Joe’s for a full refund.
