It’s been nearly 60 years since The Monkees had a No. 1 album, but they’re still making history.
In a new ranking list posted by Billboard on Oct. 4, the TV band featuring Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones was named among all of the musical acts with 30 or more weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since the album chart became a weekly statistic in March 1956. And they’re in good company.
The Monkees are tied with Harry Belafonte at 37 weeks and just under Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones at 38 weeks. The list is topped by musical heavyweights Elvis Presley, Taylor Swift and the Beatles.
The Monkees’ first week at No. 1 was on Nov. 12, 1966, with their self-titled debut album released just after their NBC sitcom debuted. Their longest-running hit came the following year, when More of the Monkees topped the Billboard album charts for 18 weeks.
“The group had a briefer span of No. 1 albums – just a little more than a year – than any other act on this list,” Billboard noted in the newly updated ranking list. “But that also underscores how hot they were at the time. They held the No. 1 spot for 31 consecutive weeks, longer than any other act in the entire 1956-2026 period.”
The outlet previously confirmed that the Monkees set a record in 1967 that still stands: “They became the first and only act to have four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in a calendar year,” Billboard reported.
The self-titled debut, More of the Monkees, Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd., were all at No. 1 at some point from late 1966 to late 1967.
More of the Monkees was the big one with that 18-week stretch, but band member Mike Nesmith wasn’t a fan. By that time he’d grown weary of the use of outside songwriters and session musicians on the Monkees tracks and wanted the band to branch out.
“The music has nothing to do with us,” Nesmith told The Saturday Evening Post in 1967, per Ultimate Classic Rock. “It was totally dishonest. Do you know how debilitating it is to sit up and have to duplicate somebody else’s records? That’s really what we were doing.”
The band gained creative control of their music in time for their fifth album, The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees, in 1968. It was also the first album released after their TV show was canceled—and their first not to hit No. 1.
