ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Starbucks is closing around 250 of its stores in the U.S. and Canada, including two local locations. It marks the second large wave of store closures in the past 13 months.
The Starbucks locations on Monroe Avenue in Brighton and South Main Street in Fairport are both set to close. Starbucks management says the closures are part of a restructuring plan, and the stores that are closing aren’t delivering acceptable financial results. In September of 2025, Starbucks also closed 627 of its stores in North America and Europe, including the Park Avenue location in Rochester.
Starbucks said last week that it will transfer employees to other stores if possible or provide severance pay. The Starbucks Workers United union said it’s ending a formal request for information to Starbucks about the planned closures and will engage in bargaining at every unionized store.
Starbucks has also been cutting its corporate ranks. The company laid off 900 nonretail employees when it closed stores last September. In May, Starbucks laid off an additional 300 corporate employees and closed some underused U.S. offices. The company said it will incur $300 million in restructuring charges with this round of closures.
