‘Lanterns’ Season 1 Ending Explained: Who Killed Hal Jordan? Who Is the Other Manhunter?

Season 1 of the HBO Max series Lanterns has finally come to an end, and it concludes by answering the biggest mystery that has hung over the superhero show from its premiere: Who Killed Hal Jordan?

The DC Universe series chronicles the journey of Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a mysterious case in Rushville, Nebraska. The show takes place in different timelines, with one storyline focusing on the aforementioned case, while the present-day storyline centers on John trying to uncover the truth behind Hal’s death. The final episode brings those two timelines together and reveals a shocking connection between several major characters. But the biggest surprise comes when the reality behind Hal’s killing is finally revealed.

So, what happened in the Season 1 finale of Lanterns? Let’s take a look.

Did Hal Know About Noah’s Secret Identity?

The finale begins after the destruction of Rushville in 2016, and we see Hal being sent to prison for all the chaos that took place at the time. Cut to 2026, Hal is being released from prison, and Kelly is there to welcome him. After returning home, Hal’s house is set on fire, forcing him into a dangerous situation. He is eventually rescued by Noah, Kerry’s son, who turns out to be another Manhunter (Yes, he does). His true identity comes to light after he heals him and saves his life.

Noah had previously been connected to Zoe Macon, who was revealed to be a Manhunter herself. Noah eventually explains that he wanted to live a normal life despite his programming and feared what he could become. John also discovers that Noah knows the truth about his identity. On the other hand, Noah revealed that the veteran Lantern followed him to a storage unit and found his portal orb that transported him to planet Ryut. Moreover, Hal learned what was inside, which scared him because he thought Hal would tell Kerry everything about him.

That, Noah says, is why he killed Hal. But the truth is far more complicated.

    Who Really Killed Hal Jordan?

Noah confessed what he did and noted that he killed Hal. However, the flashback sequences in the finale revealed that he wasn’t the person who pulled the trigger. The episode takes us back to the night of Hal’s murder, showcasing what really happened on the football field. Hal had already figured out that Noah was a manhunter and confronted Kerry about it. John went on to ask her whether there were Manhunters like her son, and Kerry confirmed that Noah was the last one.

Kerry also noted that Zoe had once saved her life, eventually leading to Noah’s birth. However, she never told Noah about his true identity. After the revelation, the series once again changes the timeline and returns to the football game. When Hal realized what was happening and began putting the pieces together, Kerry made a split-second decision and shot him in the head on the bleachers.

That particular sequence confirms that it was Kerry who actually killed Hal Jordan. She wasn’t happy about what she did, but according to her, everything happened so quickly that she couldn’t undo what she had done.

Her confession also changes the meaning of Noah’s confession. Noah believed he was responsible for Hal’s demise because he had confronted him after discovering that Hal knew his secret. Moreover, it also indicates that Noah knew what his mother had done and wanted to save her from all the chaos that could unfold if the truth came out.

    Did John Kill Noah?

After his confession, Noah asks John for a favor and wants the Green Lantern to kill him. Noah wanted to live a normal life, but he knew it was impossible for him to have one. As a result, he wanted John to end his misery. But John knew about Noah’s upbringing and ultimately decided to spare the little Manhunter.

The finale ends with John meeting fellow Lantern, Guy Gardner. He doesn’t talk much about Hal’s murder investigation and simply tells Guy that he solved the case. Moreover, John told Guy that the only thing he needs to know about the case is that Hal died a hero. In the end, John decides to pursue his future as an Independent contractor Lantern for Earth and embarks on a new journey.

The ending of Lanterns Season 1 gives this superhero series a surprisingly human conclusion. John chose mercy over revenge, but his decision to spare Noah leaves the door open for what comes next.
