Trae’shawn Brown leads Alabama’s rushing attack once again

In its dominant 56-23 victory over No. 17 Mississippi State, Alabama’s imposing rushing attack was led by the efforts of standout freshman running back Trae’shawn Brown.

The Crimson Tide wore down the Bulldogs’ defense as it accumulated 179 rushing yards.  Brown became the focal point of that effort, toting a team-high 14 carries for 66 yards, also a team-high, and two touchdowns. The next most featured back was junior Daniel Hill, who received just five carries.

The young ball-carrier made his mark early, totaling three consecutive touches on the team’s first offensive series, which ended in a 15-yard touchdown reception to junior Ryan Coleman-Williams.

He also cashed in a pair of 7-yard touchdown runs, the first of which came just after the two-minute warning in the first half, and the second coming with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

This marks the second time in three games in which Brown has led the team in both rushing attempts and yardage. Against Florida State, he totaled 86 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

The former three-star recruit’s consistent presence in the backfield points to a high level of trust from Head Coach Kalen DeBoer and the rest of the offensive staff, especially for a freshman running back.

“Trae’shawn’s benefited from a lot of the reps he got in the spring, summer [and]fall, and so he feels very comfortable out there now. You can see that he’s running hard, you know, just has a really good feel of what’s going to happen up front,” said DeBoer postgame.

Brown is not the only freshman running back who continues to flash, as EJ Crowell totaled 49 rushing yards on just three carries while displaying elite contact balance on a 37-yard explosion down the left sideline.

The young tandem, along with Daniel Hill and an improved offensive line, has helped transform what was a pedestrian rushing attack a season ago.

Early contributions from freshmen like Brown can prove invaluable as the season progresses and continue to highlight the strong developmental abilities of the coaching staff.

In the leadup to the South Carolina game, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb commented on his offense’s core of young talent.

“I think it says a lot about the program and the trust that we have in the high school kids that we recruit and the development of the players here at Alabama,” he said.

While Brown’s 211 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns through his first five games in Tuscaloosa are impressive, the young prospect’s continued development could make him an increasingly important piece for Alabama’s high-flying offense as conference play continues.

The Crimson Tide will return to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday in a highly anticipated matchup against the No. 2 ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on ABC.
