ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Honor Flight Rochester Mission 98 returned to Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, bringing 80 local veterans back from a visit to Washington, D.C.
With this flight, Honor Flight Rochester has now flown more than 5,000 local veterans to and from Washington for what it calls the trip of a lifetime. The flight left Saturday, and Sunday also marked the first time Honor Flight transported veterans by bus.
Twenty-one Livingston County veterans left on the bus Friday and made it back for today’s ceremony. The bus is funded by a grant through the New York State Dwyer Program, which provides peer-to-peer support for veterans.
The bus will be used to transport veterans who are not able to fly due to medical reasons and help fulfill the group’s motto, “We leave no veteran behind,” officials said.
“Well, we’ve discovered over the years that there’s a lot of veterans, for whatever reason, on that flight. So we wanted to meet that need and he brought a bus up here from Washington, and they met up with those veterans on Friday and drove them back up here today,” officials said.
Honor Flight has another flight coming in on October 25 and encourages people to come out and welcome back local veterans.
