Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman has passed his end-of-season physical, according to reporter Francys Romero. This was the last detail required to turn Chapman’s mutual option for 2027 into a fully guaranteed deal, so the veteran southpaw is now locked into at least a $13MM salary for his age-39 season. The final salary should fall somewhere between $13MM-$14MM, since Chapman receives a bonus of either $100K, $250K, $500K or $1MM depending on where he finishes in the MLB or BBWAA Reliever Of The Year balloting.
After inking a one-year, $10.75MM free agent deal with Boston during the 2024-25 offseason, Chapman was pitching so well that the Sox signed him to an extension in August 2025. The new deal paid Chapman $13MM in 2026 ($1MM signing bonus and the rest in salary) and added a $13MM mutual option for 2027, with a $300K buyout.
The mutual option would be guaranteed in the event that Chapman pitched at least 40 innings in 2026 and then was healthy at the end of the year. Given that Chapman has tossed more than 50 frames in 14 of his 17 Major League seasons, there wasn’t much drama about whether or not the option would vest. Sure enough, Chapman hit the 40-inning threshold by mid-August.
Passing a physical is a standard part of any contractual clause, and such a formality wouldn’t have been of note if it wasn’t for Chapman’s late-season bout of lat tightness. Chapman pitched in just one of Boston’s final 12 games in the regular season, as the club opted to give him extra rest rather than the more extreme step of a 15-day stint on the injured list. The tactic worked, and Chapman looked in fine form during his lone appearance in the Wild Card Series — Chapman struck out all three batters faced in an inning of work in Boston’s 9-2 loss to the Yankees in Game 2.
Just when it seemed like Chapman’s career was starting to wind down in his mid-30’s, he has found a second gear during his two seasons in Boston. The left-hander has a 1.51 ERA and 35.4% strikeout rate over 113 innings in a Red Sox uniform, with 67 saves in 71 opportunities. Chapman’s walk rate did jump from 6.6% in 2025 to 10.8% in 2026, and his fastball averaged “only” 97.4mph, though this is still in the 90th percentile of all pitchers in velocity.
These numbers were a big reason why the Red Sox had arguably the league’s best bullpen in 2026, even if the chain to Chapman broke down badly in the two-game sweep at New York’s hands in the ALWCS. While it couldn’t be considered a surprise if Chapman loses effectiveness at age 39, the Sox can be reasonably confident that he’ll continue to deliver solid work as the team’s top ninth-inning option. With 402 career saves, Chapman’s march up the all-time saves leaderboard from his current ninth-place spot will be another subplot of the 2027 campaign.
