The Reluctant Vampire is bringing some all-ages fun to the Halloween season, adapting Eric Morecambe's beloved books to live-action for the first time.
The BAFTA-winning star of Am I Being Unreasonable? takes on the role of Val, the youngest member of a vampire family, whose taste for blood is yet to develop.
He soon discovers that, unlike his sinister brother Vernon (Gabriel Nagy), he is actually a human – but must tread carefully to avoid this secret being detected.
Tom Davis (King Gary) and Sian Clifford (Fleabag) co-star as parents Victor and Valeeta, whose grand gothic mansion was as spooky in real-life as it appears in the show.
Here's the real – and possibly haunted – location where BBC One and iPlayer's The Reluctant Vampire was filmed.
Where is The Reluctant Vampire filmed?
The Reluctant Vampire is filmed at Woodchester Mansion, located between the town of Stonehouse and the village of Nympsfield in Gloucestershire.
The history of the building dates back to the mid-1800s, when William Leigh purchased the land and hired architect Charles Hansom to build the mansion.
However, having already spent £170,000 on the estate, and overseen construction of a nearby church and monastery, Leigh's finances were becoming strained.
The funding problems, combined with Leigh's recorded perfectionism, meant that progress on the mansion was slow – and it remained incomplete upon his death, in 1873.
In a happy accident, the poorly planned project left a unique Grade I listed building in its wake, recognisable by its missing floors and striking gargoyles, among other original features.
At a press event, executive producer Shane Allen said: "We had to do it there. It's an amazing place.
"I think if we had loads of money and did it in a studio, you'd have ended up with a set that wasn't as good as that."
The one downside of the property was that it made for an unnerving workplace during night shoots, when rumours of a ghosts haunting the property seemed quite plausible.
Co-star Davis recalled using a top floor bathroom on one such late shift, where he received an ominous warning.

"She started talking about this ghost, and then she went, 'Well, I'm just going to go out and meet some friends', and left me upstairs on my own!
"And that costume took about 40 minutes to get out of – I came down shaking, going, 'This place is haunted'. Sian was like, 'Oh, cool! Let's go and find a ghost'."
Clifford elaborated: "Genuinely, there's a woman that, apparently, walks out of the room where the bathroom is, and then just walks out of the window – like Lady Button in Ghosts... and it is the same time every night."
In the first season of Ghosts, Martha Howe-Douglas' character had a habit of storming out of a high-storey window of Button House – the same one she was pushed out of by her treacherous husband.
The daily ritual seemed to be retired after Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) became acquainted with the ghosts and effectively softened their harsher features.
Despite Ghosts' humanising depiction of the paranormal, Clifford didn't want to take any chances on the set of The Reluctant Vampire.
"There was a time, actually, where Ellie May [Sheridan, co-star] and I were on our own, and we did ask to be chaperoned to the toilet," she revealed. "It gets a bit serious when it's pitch black outside and there's no heating... it's definitely got a vibe."
Allen has been vocal about how Ghosts paved the way for The Reluctant Vampire, showing that a family-friendly fantasy comedy could thrive on BBC One.
Both shows have relied on a historic property to bring their worlds to life, with Surrey's West Horsley Place doubling for Ghosts' fictional manner Button House.
The Reluctant Vampire premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 4 October 2026.
