Fox News Personality Makes Surprising Claim About ‘Sesame Street’: ‘They Get Super Political’

A conversation about Ms. Rachel and children’s television took an unexpected turn when a Fox News personality declared that even Sesame Street has become political.

The discussion unfolded on Fox News’ new podcast the Girls as the panel debated whether children’s entertainer Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Accurso, should keep her outspoken political views separate from the content she creates for young children.

Melissa DeRosa argued that children’s entertainers can have an enormous influence on their young viewers and questioned whether someone who becomes a trusted figure during a child’s formative years should also publicly advocate for political causes.

“I sort of feel like if you’re going to be somebody who little kids look up to, we should separate those things,” DeRosa said.

She went on to argue that children could continue trusting a familiar entertainer’s views as they get older because their parents had put that person in front of them at such a young age.

But not everyone on the panel agreed.

Kat Timpf pushed back on the idea that Ms. Rachel’s political activism necessarily makes her programming harmful for children.

“I don’t think it’s that deep,” she said. “She just sings songs.”

The discussion then turned to other children’s programming, including Elmo, Bluey and Sesame Street.

“Sesame Street is political, too,” said former Real World star Rachel Campos-Duffy. “They get super political.”

The comments came during a much broader debate about how much parents should worry about the personal beliefs of the people their children watch on television and online.

Former ESPN reporter Samantha Ponder argued that parents have the responsibility to help children understand what they’re seeing and to expose them to people with different beliefs and backgrounds.

“I think it’s more about how your parents help you frame what you’re seeing and your world view as you grow up,” she said, adding that children can encounter people with differing political views without automatically adopting those beliefs.

The panel also disagreed over Ms. Rachel herself.

Harris Faulkner pointed to Accurso’s education, which includes a master’s degree in music education from New York University and a second master’s degree in early childhood education from the American College of Education, but said that as a parent, she was troubled by how vocal the children’s entertainer has been about her political views.

“When she says, ‘Yes, I am political,’ and when she talks, maybe not about it so much on her show, but adjacent to that, I’m looking at the total spectrum of what my child is going to be imbibing by watching her unattended,” said Faulkner, adding, “I don’t care if she has her politics and she feels this way, but why do I need to know it? And if there is any encroachment in that in the process of her show, that bothers me.”

Timpf argued that Ms. Rachel’s activism is largely separate from her children’s programming and said she didn’t believe the entertainer was “dangerous or bad” for young viewers.

The women ultimately remained divided over how much political advocacy by children’s entertainers should matter to parents.

But their Sesame Street exchange offered perhaps the most unexpected moment of the conversation, broadening the debate beyond Ms. Rachel to one of the most famous children’s programs in television history.
