Before they became household names, Britney Spears and Natalie Portman were both understudies in the same 1990s musical.
Laura Bell Bundy, the Broadway actress who originated the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical, is looking back on one of her earlier shows, where Spears and Portman were her understudies. The 45-year-old shared the experience during a recent appearance on the Hey Dude… The 90s Called! podcast.
“Well, actually, one pretty notable one, if we’re talking ‘90s — it was called Ruthless!,” Bundy recalled.
The dark comedy musical follows an eight-year-old girl who dreams of playing Pippi Longstocking in her school musical and won’t let anything stand in her way.
“I played a little girl who killed another little girl for a part in a show,” she explained. “It was a comedy —dark comedy, you know — and Britney Spears was my understudy. I think she’s just a couple months younger than me. And then Natalie Portman was my understudy when Britney left.”
Bundy was part of the original Off-Broadway production from March 1992 to January 1993.
“I felt I was a little closer with Natalie,” she added. “I think… I didn’t really, you know, I knew Britney, but we didn’t like play together, but like Natalie and I played together. Like we did some great prank calling.”
Bundy became a Tony Award-nominated actress and starred in productions such as Sweet Charity, Hairspray, and Romy & Michele: The Musical.
