Brewers Notes: Vaughn, Woodruff

The Brewers activated Andrew Vaughn from the 10-day injured list on Friday. That positions the corner infielder to be on the Division Series roster when Milwaukee announces their 26-man squad for their matchup with the Padres.

Vaughn has been out since September 22 due to illness. He should essentially be full-go for the postseason. He’ll provide a potent right-handed bat for Pat Murphy’s group. Vaughn is coming off a .306/.390/.444 showing with six home runs across 331 plate appearances. The former third overall pick owns a .306/.384/.466 batting line in the equivalent of one full season since Milwaukee acquired him out of DFA limbo last June.

This year’s production has come in a part-time capacity. That’s not really any fault of his. Jake Bauers has simply been one of the best hitters in the National League. Bauers’ glove is stretched in the corner outfield. Milwaukee could give Vaughn more time at designated hitter in place of Christian Yelich, who hasn’t been productive since April.

The alternative is to live with a defensive downgrade somewhere — either by playing Bauers over Sal Frelick in right field or Vaughn at third base instead of Joey Ortiz. Ortiz hit so well in the second half that he should be locked in at the hot corner as long as he’s healthy, yet he’s battling right knee and abdominal injuries that leave him at less than full strength.

Vaughn should at least be in the Game 1 lineup. He has destroyed left-handed pitching and San Diego will run Robbie Ray against Jacob Misiorowski tomorrow night. The Padres will go back to staff ace Michael King, a righty, to oppose Logan Henderson in Game 2. Neither team has announced pitching plans for when the series goes to San Diego on Tuesday.

If the Brewers get past the Padres and the winner of the Braves/Dodgers series, there remains an outside chance we see Brandon Woodruff this year. The veteran righty opted against season-ending shoulder surgery to keep a long shot possibility of an October return. Woodruff tells Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he threw from flat ground again on Friday and said he hopes to soon work off a mound.

“I know the clock is ticking against me,” he told McCalvy. “But I’m trying, that’s for sure. Whether it’s smart or not, I don’t know. But if it means pitching in the World Series …” Injuries have kept Woodruff from seeing any postseason action since 2021. He had a 2.98 ERA with a 27% strikeout rate in nine regular season starts this year.
