The annual fall migration is underway in Chicago, bringing millions of birds through the city and over Lake Michigan.
But as some migratory birds make a pitstop downtown, they can mistake reflections in glass for open sky, or trees in lobbies for a place to rest.
“So this is how we often find them. It’s concussed and a little disoriented,” volunteer Tim Ramsey said as he secured a golden-crowned kinglet into a paper bag.
Volunteers reported a significant number of dead and injured birds on Friday morning.
“Simple rule: if you can approach them and they’re not flying away by the time you get there, the bird is stunned.”
Surviving birds are taken to a rescue for rehabilitation. But most of the birds that volunteers find are already dead.
“I always like to say Chicago can be a place with beautiful architecture and beautiful birds, and I think we can make that happen,” said Annette Prince, who runs the volunteer organization Chicago Bird Collisions Monitor.
People who see downed birds can call the hotline at 773-988-1867.
Bird advocacy groups across the area, including Bird Friendly Chicago and the Windy City Bird Lab, are advocating for legislation that’s currently sitting in the zoning committee of the Chicago City Council. It could require some developers of new buildings to install bird-friendly glass to help prevent collisions with birds flying south.
“Chicago is one of the first major cities that birds come across with this new phenomenon, for them, which is glass that they can’t see or understand,” said Jorge Garcia Medina with the Windy City Bird Lab, who cited the success of similar bird-friendly glass that was installed at McCormick Place. Advocates estimate specialized glass could cost an extra 5% if installed on new construction.
“At McCormick we saw an over 90% reduction of collisions, from an average of 800 down to about 18 the year after,” Garcia Medina said. “So we can apply that on a city-wide level.”
