As gas and grocery prices keep climbing, more people are turning to food pantries just to get by.
The Rich Township food pantry in Richton Park has been around for 26 years, but the township supervisor said the pantry is seeing more new folks coming by and an uptick in people calling asking about eligibility.
“One thing that we don’t do here, we don’t turn people away,” said Calvin Jordan, Rich Township supervisor. “Behind every measure of demand is a person trying to make a household budget work as food, rent, transportation, and healthcare costs keep going up.”
Eligible households can receive four or more bags of groceries, which may include non-perishable food items, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, frozen meats, personal hygiene and care products.
The pantry is open three days a week. They typically see up 400 people in that time, from senior citizens to working parents, like Stephanie Smith and her husband.
“I started coming here in May,” said Smith, who also said she and her husband both work full-time jobs. “Even us working full time, it is still hard with gas prices. This place is a blessing, and I don’t know what I’d do without them.”
