Three people who were taken in for questioning following a deadly shooting outside the popular Oakbrook Center Mall this week were released without charges, authorities said Friday.
The Oak Brook Police Department said the three individuals who had been in police custody since the shooting were released Thursday night after investigators conducted a comprehensive review of the evidence.
“Investigators have worked diligently and in close coordination with the DuPage County State’sAttorney’s Office throughout this investigation to ensure all available evidence was thoroughlyreviewed, and the appropriate course of action was determined,” police said, in part.
The victim, 28-year-old Justin Hill, of Dolton, was shot and killed during a confrontation between two groups in the parking lot of the suburban mall Wednesday afternoon. The shooting also injured a woman, who remained hospitalized Friday at an area medical facility.
Police previously said a confrontation between two groups of individuals ended in gunfire outside Oakbrook Center Mall at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, with a man killed and a woman hurt.
Two vehicles, carrying a total of five individuals, parked near each other in the parking lot, and during that meeting an altercation occurred, with at least one individual opening fire.
Police in Oak Brook allowed the mall to stay open after the shooting, but beefed up presence around the facility as they investigated the shooting.
It’s unclear if any of the individuals detained and later released was the alleged shooter, and an investigation remains ongoing.
