Pedro Pascal can now add playing the cello to his resume. At the world premiere of his drama, Behemoth!, at the New York Film Festival, Pascal sat with writer-director Tony Gilroy (Andor) and co-stars Eva Victor and Will Arnett to discuss the film. According to PEOPLE, during the press conference on Friday, Pascal opened up about how difficult it was to learn the cello.
“Remembering that there was an actual character to play that was in a story other than just the cello,” Pascal said. “The cello was the main character of my life for several weeks leading up to shooting. I took it with me everywhere I went.”
Pascal said learning the cello normally takes a year, but he had to “fast-track” training for the production and cram it all into a week. He described this as “the hardest thing that I’ve ever done creatively for a part.”
“Everything surprised me; it was hell…and heaven,” he added. “It was incredible to be sort of in lessons again with another artist, number one, and to kind of stimulate the physical challenge of it and the meticulousness around it.”

At the panel, Pascal revealed he was nervous about his role in Behemoth!. Though he told Gilroy he was unsure he could play the role after reading the script, Pascal said the film’s story pulled him in, describing it as a “challenge in a good way.”
“I was so taken by what the story was and the kind of intimacy of all of it, in the way [of] how intimate it can feel to listen to music and to be guided by music,” Pascal said.
Behemoth! will arrive in theaters on Dec. 4.
