ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The University of Rochester will open the Eastman School of Dentistry, its first new school in more than 50 years, on Jan. 1, 2027. It will be the 7th School of Dentistry in New York State.
The new school will build on a legacy of dental education, research and clinical care that began with the Eastman Dental Dispensary in 1917. University officials said the Eastman School of Dentistry will address a nationwide shortage of dentists and the growing need for care among patients with complex medical conditions.
“We are proud to have contributed to the long legacy of dental care and innovation in Rochester and at the University of Rochester for more than a century,” Sarah Mangelsdorf, president of the University of Rochester, said.
Who will be in charge?
Eli Eliav, DMD, PhD, MBA, director of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health and vice president for oral health at the medical center, will serve as the inaugural dean. Eliav said the school’s creation is both an honor and a huge responsibility.
“The Eastman School of Dentistry will educate exceptional clinicians while developing researchers, educators, and academic leaders who can move the profession forward,” Eliav said. “We will do so while continuing our mission of outstanding postgraduate education, research, and patient care.”
Currently, the Eastman Institute for Oral Health trains dentists in 10 specialty programs and provides care to patients from 55 of New York’s 62 cities. Eliav said the institute specializes in treating patients with complex medical conditions, which is increasingly needed in the region.
“About 30% to 40% of the population in the U.S. cannot get routine oral health care,” Eliav said. He added that financial barriers and a shortage of dentists, especially those trained to care for patients with complex conditions, contribute to the problem.
The Oral Health Crisis
Eliav said there are about 60 dentists per 100,000 people in the U.S., compared to 110 per 100,000 in Scandinavia. He said the new school aims to close this gap by training dentists who can treat patients with complex medical needs and become leaders in academic dentistry.
Pending approval from the Commission on Dental Accreditation and New York State, the school will offer a Doctor of Dental Medicine program to complement its existing specialty programs. Eliav said the dental program will take four years to complete, following a required bachelor’s degree, and will include research and community service components.
The school will be funded internally by the University of Rochester Medical Center. Eliav said the program is supported by internal resources.
Eliav said the school’s integration with the medical center will help combine oral health and overall health care, offering unique training for future dentists.
