Egypt is targeting July 2027 to begin passenger operations on the first line of its high-speed electric railway network, connecting Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea with Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean, Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir said on Wednesday, 30 September. Official project updates describe the line as part of the Sokhna-Alexandria logistics corridor, which is intended to connect Red Sea and Mediterranean ports with industrial and logistics areas. El-Wazir said high-speed trains on the line will operate at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, with journeys between Cairo and Marsa Matrouh expected to take between two and two-and-a-half hours.
