Sheryl Crow’s 1993 Ballad Gets a Surprise Cover From Olivia Rodrigo, 23

It’s a rare thing to be able to be tell someone who created a beloved song how much it means to you. A 23-year-old pop star got that chance in Nashville last month, in front of a room full of the songwriter’s friends.

Olivia Rodrigo made a surprise appearance at the BMI Troubadour Award ceremony to honor Sheryl Crow, closing the night with a cover of “Strong Enough,” the ballad from Crow’s 1993 debut album Tuesday Night Music Club.

“This is my favorite song of yours,” Rodrigo told Crow before she sang. “It’s a feeling that I felt so many times in my life but never really had the words to describe it, but you did so perfectly.”

She also spoke about the woman behind it. “What inspires me the most about her is her heart, her kindness, and her generosity,” Rodrigo said.

The event was an intimate, invite-only dinner at BMI’s Nashville office, and the lineup was a tribute in itself. Jason Isbell opened with “Run, Baby, Run.” Melissa Etheridge sang “If It Makes You Happy,” Eric Church took on “Leaving Las Vegas,” Lauren Daigle performed “Everyday Is a Winding Road,” and Chris Stapleton delivered “I Shall Believe.” Rodrigo was the unannounced finale. Variety reported that she flew in for the occasion.

The Troubadour Award, according to BMI, honors “a songwriter who has made a profound impact within the American music landscape and whose work continues to set the pace for generations to follow.” Past recipients include John Fogerty, John Prine and Lucinda Williams. Crow, a nine-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, received a Gibson J-45 guitar along with the honor.

The friendship between the two singers goes back several years. They have shared the stage at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, and Rodrigo joined Crow at her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2023. A year later, Crow joined Rodrigo at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Rodrigo told the room that Crow gave her a guitar at the Hall of Fame ceremony, and that it remains her most prized possession.

“Strong Enough” was released as a single in 1994, when Crow was a new artist and Rodrigo had not yet been born. The song asks a partner whether he is strong enough to be her man.

BMI has posted video of Rodrigo’s performance, along with Etheridge’s. Variety noted that every guest sang with a house band of Nashville players.
