The Opener: Phillies, Kerr, Division Series Matchups

Chris Sale kicked off the postseason with a quality start on Tuesday. He closed out the Wild Card round by securing the final four outs last night. The lefty is ready to go for the NLDS. “If I’d have to pitch tomorrow, I’d pitch tomorrow,” Sale said (h/t Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

1. Phillies knocked out again

They put up an admirable fight to force a Game 3, but the Phillies fell to the Braves last night. The club has now lost four straight postseason series. Philadelphia hasn’t won a playoff round since 2023, when it beat Atlanta in the NLDS. The organization heads into the offseason facing numerous questions, chief among them the status of interim manager Don Mattingly. The skipper took over for former manager Rob Thomson at the end of April and revived the Phillies’ season, though the team faded down the stretch.

    2. Kerr delivers for Braves

With few trustworthy starters to choose from, Braves manager Walt Weiss gave Ray Kerr the ball in an elimination game. The reliever did much more than open the game, navigating 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run. Kerr has had a winding career and didn’t pitch in the majors last year. He only joined the Braves in mid-August. “Hopefully Ray Kerr became a bit of a household name tonight,” Weiss said (h/t Mark Bowman of MLB.com). “He deserves it. He’s got an amazing story of perseverance.” Kerr could be called on again to face the Dodgers this weekend.

    3. Division Series matchups on tap

Sadly, there’s no baseball on the schedule today. The action will resume on Saturday. The White Sox and Guardians will open the Division Series round at noon CT. Standout rookie Parker Messick will start for Cleveland. Next up are the Braves and Dodgers, followed by the Rays and Yankees. Drew Rasmussen and Gerrit Cole will face off in that AL East battle. The Padres and Brewers will close the slate. Jacob Misiorowski will get the ball for top-seeded Milwaukee.
