The $180m development contains 10 office spaces, three flexible conference rooms which can be combined to form one large venue, a 1,600-sq-ft outdoor community garden, public art and green roofs.
The project was managed by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) using a design-build method of project delivery undertaken by Gilbane Building Company and Marvel.
The team estimated that 11,000 tons of material were removed during demolition, 85% of which was recycled.
The centre contains a series of installations by artist Jazmine Hayes called “I Am Protected,” featuring images of braids, cowry shells and repeating patterns that reflect the history of Brownsville.
Zohran Mamdani, New York’s mayor, said: “City government should deliver beautiful, sustainable public buildings that serve working people and the communities they call home.”
Paul A. Ochoa, DDC commissioner, said: “It’s hard to build a community without building enough community space.
“By bringing organisations, services and residents under one roof, the centre will create so many new opportunities for connection, learning and community engagement, while also giving local organisations a dedicated place to serve Brownsville.”
