This month, hundreds of women will volunteer their time and talents to help to build homes on Chicago’s South Side.
They are participating in Habitat for Humanity’s Chicago Women Build event, the group’s largest annual fundraising and volunteer event.
Belinda Hutcherson is one of the women who volunteered for the start of the event Thursday. She became a homeowner at the age of 74.
“It is such a precious thing to be able to say this is my home,” said Hutcherson. “To know that someone else is gonna live in these homes just like you have a home through Habitat, it is amazing. It is the reason why I just love what Habitat is doing for the community.”
The goal is to construct the first eight homes in the Maple Park Landing Townhome development in the West Pullman community. Volunteers are doing everything from woodwork and painting to hanging drywall.
“We’ve been doing this fundraiser for 14 years and we’ve got the most number of women coming out to join us this month of October. We’ll have over 700 women raising over $750,000, our largest ‘Women Build’ to date,” said Jennifer Parks/Executive director for Habitat for Humanity Chicago. “Becoming a homeowner is harder than ever. So our job as Habitat for Humanity Chicago is to provide that opportunity for affordable homeownership. To work with the buyers, prepare them for that homeownership journey, build the homes, and then together they will acquire homeownership and have an affordable place to live for the next 30 years.”
“We are talking about 20 new town homes; all being owned by folks. It’s gonna help support the local businesses that we wanna see here,” added Ald. Ronnie Mosley of Chicago’s 21st Ward. “To be able to come home and open the door, to a space of your own, to cherish that, to raise a family, to live out your days, I mean, this is literally the American dream.”
