Right-hander José Urquidy has elected free agency, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. That indicates he cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Phillies a few days ago.
Urquidy bounced around the league this year, getting work in an emergency depth starter/swingman/long reliever kind of role. Between the Pirates, White Sox and Phillies, he logged 36 1/3 innings over 13 appearances, allowing 4.95 earned runs per nine. His 18.3% strikeout rate was below average but his 4.3% walk rate was excellent and his 40% ground ball rate just shy of par.
The Phils grabbed him from waivers in September as they needed some innings to get through the regular season. Because he was acquired after the September 1 cutoff, he wasn’t going to be playoff eligible for the Phillies. That makes it unsurprising that they cut him. It’s also understandable that no one else bothered to claim him this time. He wouldn’t have been playoff eligible with any other club and was slated for free agency at season’s end anyway.
There was also no reason for him to stick with the Phillies, so he’ll get a start on his offseason. His 2026 season was his most extensive big league work in years. He was once a rotation staple in Houston. By the end of the 2022 season, he had thrown 342 innings over 63 appearances with a 3.74 ERA. His numbers regressed in 2023 and then Tommy John surgery wiped out most of his 2024 and 2025 campaigns.
This year, he was healthy and had some reasonable effectiveness. In addition to his big league work, he tossed 95 2/3 innings over 20 Triple-A starts. He had a 3.48 ERA, 20.8% strikeout rate, 5.3% walk rate and 41.3% ground ball rate in those. Last offseason, he was able to get a big league deal with a $1.5MM guarantee from the Pirates. His earning power should be in about the same range this year. He could get a big league deal or a minor league pact from a club searching for experienced rotation depth.
