HOPEWELL, N.Y. — State Route 488 at the intersection with Freshour Road will be reduced to one lane next week so crews can create a four-way stop.
The lane reduction will happen Wednesday, Oct. 7, starting at 9 a.m. The State Department of Transportation (DOT) says new stop signs and stop-ahead signs will be installed in both directions on State Route 488.
The DOT says the work will be done by the end of the day Wednesday, and the new stop signs will take effect immediately upon installation.
This comes after one person was killed and multiple people were hurt after a bus crash at the same intersection.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with neighbors at the time, who said crashes at that intersection are not uncommon.

Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione agreed at the time that the intersection poses a threat for drivers.
“This intersection is known for crashes. It’s known for personal injury crashes. Specifically for north bound vehicles that are going to cross Route 488. It is a challenge. And you have to stop and definitely take an extra second to make sure nobody’s coming from either direction,” Cirencione said.
People should expect travel delays as crews install the stop signs. People are also being advised to proceed with caution after the stop signs are installed, as traffic adjusts to the new pattern.
