Its Time to Give Britt Stewart Her Flowers

Week three of "Dancing with the Stars" Season 35 ended with the elimination of Taylor Hanson and pro Britt Stewart, shocking not only the viewers at home, but also fellow pros and contestants. Following the couple's departure from the show, fans online shared their frustrations, and many noted the pattern of Britt being eliminated early on each season. Regardless of how you feel, one thing is certain: Britt Stewart's flowers are long overdue.

Before joining "Dancing with the Stars," Stewart was a principal dancer in the "High School Musical" franchise and worked in other projects like "Teen Beach Movie," "Fame," and even performed on tour alongside musicians including Janet Jackson, Rihanna, and Demi Lovato. I remember watching "High School Musical 3" and being entranced with the girl in the white prom dress. Years later, learning that it was Stewart blew my mind. As someone who grew up watching "Dancing with the Stars," I would have loved to see a Black woman pro take the stage when I was a kid. The only time I felt represented while watching the show was through the celebrities and that just wasn't the same.

"There was the palpable sense of shock and disappointment, but even more so the sullen acceptance of a reality that had happened time and time again."

Stewart is the first and only Black woman pro in the show's 21-year run. And after seven seasons as a pro and five season in the troupe, you would think that Stewart would be given the opportunity to make it to the finals. But for five out of her seven seasons as a pro, she has been eliminated early and finished no higher than 10th place. One of the main criticisms fans online have discussed is the type of celebrities she is partnered with. Oftentimes, Stewart has been paired with older contestants or those whose fanbase is more niche, making it harder to pass the mid-season popularity threshold. The fans yearn for a Britt Stewart freestyle, but sadly she's one of the few pros who haven't made it to the finals. The closest she got was when she was paired with her now-husband, Daniel Durant, finishing in 5th place.

I thought this year would be different. I, like many others, hoped Stewart would be paired with Harry Shum Jr. (She'd mentioned he was her dream partner). And when she wasn't Taylor Hanson's fanbase and quick skill progression brought me hope. But Stewart was eliminated during week three and I couldn't help but feel heartbroken seeing the disappointment in her eyes as the judges called her name. There was the palpable sense of shock and disappointment, but even more so the sullen acceptance of a reality that had happened time and time again. As I sat there and watched Stewart hug her fellow contestants yet again, I wondered if Stewart's time to shine would ever come.

Representation isn't just about equality, it's about equity. Britt deserves the opportunity and the right partner to shine brightly because she is a star - both in and out of the ballroom. She is representation in action, from starting the non-profit organization Share The Movement to help increase diversity in the professional dance community to living her dream on "Dancing With the Stars." I just wish that representation lasted a little longer each season. As a creative Black woman myself, I see so much of myself in her and it would mean the world to see her evolution. Witnessing her process and what beautiful dances come from that would not only heal part of my inner child, but it would encourage more young people of color to nurture their creativity and artistry. Still, I'm grateful for what Britt Stewart has given us. Even if her spotlight on DWTS cuts out early, no leaderboard could ever fully convey what you've meant to me and so many other Black women and girls. Maybe next season will be ours.
