Suburban grandmother accused of beating teens, forcing them to do chores ‘nonstop

A suburban grandmother has been accused of abusing her two teen grandchildren, keeping them in her home and forcing them to do chores “nonstop” for years, prosecutors said.

Romeoville police said they were called Monday to a restaurant in the area after someone reported a minor “who was hiding from his grandmother and caretaker.”

Officers said the 16-year-old had “facial injuries” and scars “in various states of healing,” as well as injuries to his hand, including what appeared to be a broken finger.

Police said the teen informed them he lived in a home in the area with his 14-year-old sister and their grandmother, identified as Cassandra Mosley-Dagons, whom the teen boy said had been abusing the pair “for years.”

Prosecutors said investigators learned that the two teens were homeschooled “and do work cleaning” and other chores “non stop.”

“The defendant routinely abuses them and states they did not do [the] chore or task correctly. He said his sister gets it worse,” a proffer from court stated.

According to prosecutors, the 16-year-old said one day before he was found, his grandmother forced him to strip to his underwear before she “whipped him with an extension cord on the backside.” Authorities noted he had several scars and welts in “various states” of healing.

“He stated 12 days ago she beat him about his face. He had facial injuries to his face that were consistent with being beaten. He indicated that she beats their hands with a bludgeon. He had hand injuries that included what appeared to be a broken finger,” the proffer read.

Authorities also noted the teen said the last time he could remember leaving his home for “something fun or social” was in 2020 and that he only has contact with people through the internet.

He fled the home Monday but returned in the middle of the night through a window to sleep briefly before fleeing again, prosecutors said.

They reported both teens were taken to the hospital for treatment and the Department of Children and Family services was called and took them into custody.

The 16-year-old appeared “thin” with prosecutors saying he looked “three to four years younger than his age.”

Mosely-Dagons faces multiple felony counts of aggravated domestic battery and prosecutors are seeking to have her kept behind bars pretrial.
