Fresh from her latest Doctor Who story, Circuit Breaker, Jo Martin is set for a new adventure with none other than Absolutely Fabulous star Helen Lederer.
The pair will join forces for three Big Finish audio adventures, which will make up the boxset The Fugitive Doctor: Running Wild, set for release in November.
The Fugitive Doctor (Martin) is still on the run from Division – but now, determined to find answers, she's about to take control. The new story is set to reveal "shocking secrets" about her stint at the Time Lord Agency, with her old foes, the Daleks (voiced by Nicholas Briggs), making an appearance.
Lederer (who played Catriona in AbFab) voices the recently regenerated Cosmogon, a Time Lord who is hunting the Doctor for Gallifrey’s High Council. However, the pair also face other strange and dangerous encounters across time and space.
Lederer said: “Doctor Who is part of my childhood, probably most people’s childhood. I realise now what an institution it is. And now I’m part of the family! I was thrilled to get the scripts. There’s a kind of twisty humour embedded in it, but it is otherworldly too.
“Cosmogon is a very interesting character, divided in her motives because she has to do the right thing. She has to veer who is she fighting for and against, but always with a slight exasperated humour.”
Script editor Robert Valentine added: “This new phase of the Fugitive Doctor’s adventures sees her taking a more aggressive course in her flight from Division. She may still be on the run, but she’s determined to find the mysterious ‘Man in the Grey Suit’, who may know the secrets of her predicament.
“I’m delighted to have the wonderful Helen Lederer join the series as Cosmogon’s second incarnation. The dogged Time Lord detective has been forcibly regenerated by Division in the hope she’ll play by their rules in their hunt for the Doctor, but this new Cosmo won't bend so easily.
"Helen’s Cosmogon is funny, wild and in many ways more like the Doctor than the Doctor is, and I can’t wait for people to hear them together.”
Previously speaking to Radio Times, Martin made it clear how much she relishes expanding the Fugitive Doctor's story across audio and recent multimedia projects like Circuit Breaker.
"There are so many layers to her, and we're just finding these layers, which has been a real gift and a real joy. She's not one-dimensional, which is what she kind of veers on in her TV appearances, really – you don't see all the other things that make her tick," she said.
"I think that in all my TV appearances, she's very decisive, she knows what [she's doing], it's a very hard line, and no nonsense.
"And I think with Big Finish and with Circuit Breaker, we've got room to breathe and room for more nuance and room for making her a far more multi-dimensional character."
