Wednesday marked the last day for OBGYN and maternal care at St. Joseph’s hospital in Joliet.
The hospital’s parent for-profit owner Prime Healthcare has blamed the closure on overall financial difficulties and what they say is a declining birthrate in Will County.
Prime will also end maternal care at Resurrection Hospital in Chicago as well as Mercy Medical Center in suburban Aurora. The company also announced that it would expand maternal care at two other area hospitals, including St. Mary of Nazareth in Chicago and Olympia Fields hospital in suburban Olympia Fields.
A spokesperson for Prime told NBC 5 that the hospitals will still all have the capacity to provide emergency labor and delivery care to women who come into the ER.
“All three of these facilities will remain comprehensive 24-hour emergency hospitals,” the statement says. “Our board-certified emergency physicians and clinical teams are trained to evaluate and stabilize obstetric emergencies. When specialized obstetric care is required and transfer is clinically appropriate, established protocols and transfer agreements will support safe transfer to an accepting hospital. If transfer is not clinically safe because delivery or another emergency intervention is imminent, our facilities will provide the necessary emergency care, including delivery when required.”
The closure comes as nurses have been battling layoffs and cutbacks, and they say the closure could mean life or death for expectant mothers and their children.
“Our biggest impacted population is that low income and minority populations in this area who don’t have the ability to travel to these other locations,” said Cristina Vanoskey, a nurse who specializes in labor and pediatric care. “So they come to us very often in some kind of distress.”
Vanoskey says she was informed she would be losing her job as part of the closure.
