‘Ruthless! The Musical’ comes to Allen-Bales Theatre

The University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Ruthless! The Musical,” performed inside the Allen Bales Theatre, running Sept. 28 to Oct. 4.

According to the Department of Dance & Theatre website, “Ruthless! The Musical” is about an ambitious girl who does whatever it takes to get her lead role of Pippi Longstocking that “explores the dark side of talent and the relentless drive to succeed and asks what happens when the pursuit of stardom begins to take on a life of its own.”

“People should be interested because it’s completely unhinged, all of our actors and designers are having a blast creating the set,” said Natasha Straley, director of “Ruthless!,” “It’ll be a lot of fun and I really want people to feel as if they’re a part of the show.”

Sophie Swingler, assistant director of “Ruthless!,” said no matter how many times you watch it, the audience will find themselves laughing. The characters in the play remain true to themselves while following an excellent storyline.

“It’s a great comedic piece where college can just come in and have a good laugh and really feel connected to the characters and feel connected to the arts,” Swingler said.

Maddie Truitt, a graduate student majoring in dance and choreographer of “Ruthless!” said she took the opportunity to choreograph and collaborate with the Department of Theatre & Dance.

“The characters being larger than life, and to work with the physicality in their movement and choreography of the pieces, how do I make these characters the most full version of themselves,” Truitts said.

Straley said Truitts has been great in rehearsals because of her excited energy to sustain long rehearsals during the weekdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“We spend a lot of time together. The culture we’ve created as a team is really important, and it’s one of the things that’s made this experience enjoyable,” Truitts said.

Auditions and production meetings were held in late March throughout the spring semester to avoid working over the summer months. The rehearsals began on the first day of classes.

“It’s more exciting and thrilling to like to see all the different things that come from you around the corner and learn about a new piece of theater that most people don’t know about,” Swingler said.
