SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner commuter train is getting increased riders and those who try it say it has saved them time and money.
A special outreach at the Santa Barbara train station has taken place to continue to get the word out.
It involved the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG), The LOSSAN Agency which operates the Surfliner, the City of Santa Barbara Sustainability Department, the Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) and BCycle.
Those who take the morning trains have found it to be easier that driving and getting jammed up in traffic when they are coming from Ventura County to Santa Barbara and Goleta.
With the extra train service the workers can get to their job site by 8:00am or 8:30am it can go home either by a train or the coastal bus service.
At the train station, there are services available with shuttles and bikes to help the employee finish their trip.
One worker in the Funk Zone said she can walk from the station to her job at Shalhoob's restaurant.
Others say they have been able to log on using the wi-fi on the train and begin working before they get to their desks.
Many of the riders say they do look up to see the cars "stuck" in traffic or moving slowly, especially in the freeway construction zone. That project is finished in Carpinteria and is well into the Montecito-Santa Barbara area.
During a special outreach Wednesday, free tacos were served and new riders were given ten free trips.
SBCAG says just over 100 riders are using the service now and they hope to have 200 by the end of the year.
