The Buffalo Bills are off to a 3-0 start but didn’t look close to the part in week 3, escaping the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16, despite five turnovers. Despite the careless play on offense, Buffalo’s defense only allowed L.A. to reach the end zone once, and Josh Allen ended with two rushing touchdowns for the third straight game.
Allen left the game “banged up,” per Joe Brady, who told the media on Wednesday that it’s nothing to worry about. But Allen and the Bills offense will play a New England team that should be pretty juiced up at 1-2 and not wanting to trail the Bills by three games in the division.
But the Patriots have been awfully awful. Drake Maye has thrown six interceptions to one touchdown, about as bad a start to a season as you could imagine, considering he nearly won the MVP and led New England to a Super Bowl in 2025. Although, for how bad Maye has played, you also have to think he’s due for a better game soon, especially with his team’s backs against the wall already in week 4.
But count all of those storylines as secondary to the fact that this is a divisional and rivalry game. When that’s the case, you can almost always expect a spirited, if not competitive, game from both sides – even if they have had polar opposite starts to the season.
Years past
The Bills and Patriots are no strangers to each other, with New England leading the rivalry, 80-52-1. For a long time, it was Tom Brady dominating Buffalo. During the Bills’ last game against the Chargers, Brady was on the broadcast and even boasted about his 33-3 record against them, only losing twice ever at the old Highmark Stadium.
But in the Josh Allen era, things have looked different. While New England has stolen a few, Allen’s gone 8-6 against them (technically 8-7, but in their 2025 finale he played one snap and went out of the game to take his games-started streak alive).
In 2025, the teams split, notably each winning on each other’s turf. Could that be the case again in 2026? The Bills hope not, as they look to continue to control the series under Allen and improve to 4-0.
Player to watch: Greg Rousseau
While Josh Allen is likely the frontrunner for MVP in the NFL through two weeks, Greg Rousseau might have a case to be in second right behind him. Buffalo’s top pass rusher has sacked the opposing quarterback twice in each game this season, with a league-leading six sacks so far.
While that rate might be hard to keep up all season long, it could realistically continue in week four. Maye’s been sacked three times in each game this season and went down a whopping 47 times a season ago. Since entering the NFL, he’s ranked among the most sacked quarterbacks in the league.
Obviously, other guys on the Buffalo Bills defense might join the party and close the gap on Rousseau, but considering how well he’s played, you just have to keep him as the player to watch. Imagine if he gets two more and gets up to eight sacks through four weeks? Rousseau might be entering some historic talks at that point.
