Alabama volleyball’s SEC record falls to 0-2 after losing in three sets to the Ole Miss Rebels in the Crimson Tide’s SEC home opener.
The first set was close at the beginning, but the Rebels’ defense and attacking skills were too much for the Crimson Tide to handle, and they ultimately lost 17-25.
Ole Miss held Alabama to a -0.065 hitting percentage in the second set, resulting in a Rebel win, 19-25.
Although the home team maintained a lead for most of set three, the Rebels came back from a six-point deficit to defeat Alabama 23-25.
“I feel like we need to work on our passing a little bit more, and just finding different ways to be efficient scoring,” said head coach Rashinda Reed.
The team’s stats were lower than normal; however, Mya Allen did hit five of the team’s 24 kills, and Leilia Toailoa served four aces. Lily Gervase also continued to block well, recording four of the team’s five blocks.
The support from fans today helped the team keep spirits high even when struggling. Coach Reed was excited to see the support and hopes the fans “continue to come back.”
Despite the loss, fans lined the court after the match waiting for player autographs. Lifelong Alabama volleyball fan and University alumna, Katie Sparks, was among those in the long line.
“I think it’s good to see how far they’ve come as a team, even though they have lost,” Sparks said. “It was still good. Their connection was there.”
Alabama hopes to score its first SEC win on the road against Texas A&M on Oct. 2nd at 6:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on SEC Network+ and the ESPN app.
