Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) has dealt a troubling warning to surrogate son Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) in Emmerdale.
Joe has crumbled in recent weeks. The floor has fallen from beneath the Home Farm millionaire's feet, following the death of wife-to-be Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley).
They were due to be married, though prior to the ceremony she had second thoughts. Under the belief that Joe was the one who attacked her ex-husband Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle), she chose to flee the village with him.
However, the situation unfolded and Billy was forced to tell the truth. Dawn rushed back to Joe and declared her devotion for him - just moments before Jimmy King's (Nick Miles) car crashed into their wedding marquee.
Dawn seemed to get off unscathed, though died from internal bleeding hours later. She'd also just given birth to her son, and Joe has struggled to accept the child ever since.
He sees the infant as a stark reminder of everything he's lost, and the cause of Dawn's death. Graham and Kim Tate (Claire King) have urged him to reconsider his decision to give baby Tate up for adoption, the latter burnt by reminders of giving her own daughter up in 1999.
In today's episode, Joe woke up on the sofa after withdrawing opportunity for Graham and Kim to visit the hospital ward.
They were enraged, and Graham decided to play a trick on his former ward. Opening up his laptop, he played a video of Dawn talking enthusiastically about the arrival of their baby. Hearing her voice for the first time since her death sent shivers through Joe, who quickly closed the laptop and refused to listen to Graham's pleas.
The men ended up at the hospital, where Joe gazed over his child. Graham hoped that he'd had a change of heart, but the visit instead cemented to him that he was ready to let go.
He proposed to Graham that, if he truly saw him as his son, he could arrange a private adoption, ensuring that the child went to a good home.
Sickened by the suggestion, Graham warned that - if he was to complete the deed - it would be the last thing he'd ever do for Joe.
