Things just continued to go south for the Cubs in the seventh inning, as Tatis stole second base and ultimately scored as Kelly’s throw was kicked into left field, putting an exclamation point on the Padres’ victory.
Padres fans got an extra jolt of adrenaline in the ninth inning, as Joe Musgrove came into the game for his first appearance since the 2024 postseason, spending nearly two full years off the mound. He responded to a raucous ovation from the Petco Park crowd by striking out Michael Busch on three straight pitches, but gave up singles to Seiya Suzuki and Nico Hoerner and a walk to Ian Happ to give the Cubs one final scoring threat.
It all was for naught however, as Ramirez popped out to second base and pinch-hitter Michael Conforto struck out looking to end the game, giving the Padres a 1-0 series lead.
Game 2 is set for Wednesday night at 9 p.m., with the contest airing on Peacock and NBCSN.
