One scene from this 1995 film still haunts Kyle MacLachlan.
The 67-year-old actor, known for his collaborations with the late David Lynch as well as projects like Sex and the City, Fallout, and Desperate Housewives, is no stranger to dark subject matter. Yet, MacLachlan described a scene from the 1995 film Showgirls as the most horrifying to watch back.
The star spoke about the scene while promoting his memoir, Fictional Selves, in New York City on Monday, Sept. 28. Ethan Hawke moderated a discussion about the book at Symphony Space’s Peter Jay Sharp Theatre.
A fan asked the Twin Peaks star if he ever watched a scene that “was totally different than what you experienced when you were doing it.” MacLachlan immediately knew his answer.
“Yeah, the scene in the pool in Showgirls,” MacLachlan responded, alluding to his iconic scene between his and Elizabeth Berkley‘s characters. In new memoir he describes it writing, “Elizabeth flops around as if in distress, and I hold on for dear life.”
The well-known scene sparked laughter and cheers from the crowd. Hawke, who has worked with MacLachlan in projects such as Rich in Love (1992), Hamlet (2000), Tesla (2020), and The Lowdown (2025), teased his repeat co-star.
“I’ve sat at those first screenings where it’s just you and your agent and you watch a movie,” Hawke said. “Sometimes it’s a nice experience, sometimes it’s not. But the idea of watching you watch Showgirls for the first time— ”
Hawke began laughing as MacLachlan jumped in, “Sheer horror. Oh my God.”
“I could imagine people saying to you, ‘Why didn’t you turn Showgirls down?’ A lot of the best films you do are things everybody tells you to turn down,” Hawke shared. “You have to follow audacious spirit. Until you jump off that cliff, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The Golden Globe winner agreed with Hawke and used a quote attributed to fellow Lynch collaborator Isabella Rossellini.
“I can describe working with David as: one, two, three — leap into the void,” the quote from Rossellini reads as featured in MacLachlan’s memoir.
Fictional Selves is out now, wherever books are sold.
