WILLIAMSON, N.Y. — Officials say one person was hurt after an ammonia leak at Williamson Cold Storage in Wayne County on Monday.
A forklift hit an ammonia line inside the facility, causing the leak, the Williamson Fire Department said. One person was hurt during the response and taken for treatment.
The building and a nearby Walgreens were shut down, and Railroad Avenue and Cole Street were blocked off, but both streets and Walgreens have reopened. Crews remained at the scene for about three hours, clearing out a little before 4:30 p.m.
“They basically had all the valves shut down the guys from Lamson Foor excuse me KM Davies came over and assisted, and they managed to help draw the ammonia back into the receiving room to get it out of the system,” the fire chief said. “Because ammonia once you shut off the bowels, it will build pressure on its own so by drawing it back it could you know help reduce anything that could escape,” Williamson Fire Chief John Manahan.
Chief Manahan could not say exactly how much ammonia was lost. News10NBC reached out to Williamson Cold Storage for comment but has not heard back yet. Check back for any updates.
