ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With just a few days left of Early Intervention Awareness Month, local lawmakers announced $250,000 in funding for a new study on early intervention.
The Children’s Agenda will conduct the study to examine the challenges facing families and providers. Early intervention includes support for physical motor skills, developmental delays and disabilities.
“And the unfortunate part is that, many of these children will age out before they are able to receive services. So we have to be able to look at how do we bolster this entire program, how do we deliver on time to these services that they have a legal right to,” said Bob Russell, president and CEO of Rochester Hearing and Speech Center.
Lawmakers said 70,000 children qualify for early intervention services in New York state each year. They said the study’s findings will help policymakers understand the needs of the system.
Advocates hope the effort will prevent anyone from falling through the cracks.
