Futurama creator Matt Groening has said he’s “not too worried” about the future of the animated series following the season 14 finale.
The last episode of the latest season, which aired on September 28, is titled Final Ending: The Last Conclusion – and appears to indicate that, 25 years after its debut, the show might finally have come to an end. A 15th season is also yet to be officially renewed.
But speaking to Variety following the conclusion of season 14, Groening said: “They can put us in a coffin. They can nail the lid shut, but they can't bury us. We will rise again. I guess I'm not too worried."
He continued: "The thing about 'Is Futurama coming to an end?' Well, we've come to an end many times before. We make a joke about it with the season finale. It's redundantly, fatalistically titled.
"I think we have a whistling-past-the-graveyard attitude these days because we've been in this situation many times before. We have lots more stories to tell. The animators and the actors and the writers all would love to do more stories, and we'll see. You never know."
In the meantime, fans have three supersized specials, which have been described as XXXL-Sized episodes, to look forward to.
It was announced that Hulu had given the greenlight to the specials back in July, with the first being Christmas-themed and expected to launch in 2027.
Futurama is created by Groening and developed by Groening and David X Cohen. Executive producers include Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz.
Season 14 follows the Planet Express crew as they navigate the year 3026, and stars the likes of John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil Lamarr and David Herman.
